Oscar nominees

The Oscars will be presented on Sunday.  This year features a new twist for best picture:  10 nominees.  Additionally, a new voting mechanism–preferential voting–will be used to select the best picture.  Under preferential voting, voters do not simply choose the one movie that they think is the best.  Rather, they select three of the ten movies as the best and the order these three movies from best to worst. This provides additional information from which to pick the best movie, with the goal of more accurately identifying what the best movie is.  Let’s hope the new system works.
